Earlier this year Truth Social, a social platform championed by former US President Donald Trump launched on Apple’s App Store with a promise of launching later for Android users.
The social platform which launched on February 21 after the controversial former president was kicked out of several platforms like Twitter and Facebook, is yet to receive approval for distribution on Google Play Store. Google cites insufficient content moderation as the reason for this denial.
In a statement it shared, Google said that “On August 19, we notified Truth Social of several violations of standard policies in their current app submission and reiterated that having effective systems for moderating user-generated content is a condition of our terms of service for any app to go live on Google Play.”
Google expressed several concerns with regards to the Truth Social app violating its Play Store policies which are in place to mitigate content that incite violence and is filled with physical threats; the same reason Donald Trump got kicked out from other platforms last year.
Truth Social’s parent Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG) said that it has “continuously worked in good faith with Google to ensure that the Truth Social Android App complies with Google’s policies without compromising our promise to be a haven for free speech,” adding that “some of our competitors’ apps are allowed in the Google Play Store despite rampantly violating Google’s prohibition on sexual content and other policies, whereas Truth Social has zero tolerance for sexually explicit content.” The company said that users can expect an “engaging and censorship-free experience” on Truth Social.
The delay in its android launch is a setback for the app as android smartphones comprise about 40 percent of the smartphone market in the US. On a global scale, android smartphones take up 71.85 percent of the global smartphone market. Google Play Store may also be the only way that android users can access Truth Social. Android users can, however, access the platform via the web.
