Today, Acronis which is a top leader in cyber protection launched a new data centre in Lagos, Nigeria. The data centre launched today in Lagos, Nigeria, is part of a planned 111 new data centres the company wants to deploy majorly in Africa.
Acronis International GmbH (referred to as Acronis for short) came into the scene in 2003 and is a global technology company that develops on-premises and cloud software for backup and disaster recovery. The company also runs a Managed Service Provider (MSP) platform built to enable cyber protection services.
Thanks to the new data centre launched in Lagos, Nigeria, yesterday, Acronis clients will no longer have to face challenges associated with data compliance, data sovereignty and performance requirements. The new Nigeria data centre will unlock a range of cyber protection solutions for service providers, giving them the power to deliver efficient and even new services while ensuring data sovereignty, the continuous availability of data as well as faster access.
For local service providers in Nigeria, what the new data centre means to them is access, in terms of proximity, to storing significant business data for their clients. Acronis will also be giving Managed Service Providers (MSPs) complete access its range of cloud and cyber security solutions. There is a growing importance of having access to a data centre such as Acronis’ because service providers in Nigeria are exposed to cyber threats and with the demand for data accessibility, privacy and compliance on the increase, the launch of Acronis’ data centre is very timely.
Through the data launch, Acronis which is headquartered in Switzerland and Singapore, and has eighteen offices across the world, wants to provide local service providers in Nigeria with a platform that ensures they never face challenges in regards to their data operations. The new data centre will also offer proximity to Acronis range of cloud and cyber security solutions.
The launch which held yesterday at Lagos Oriental Hotel, Lagos, witnessed the attendance of key industry and company executives and specially-invited guests. Former Public Affairs Director of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and President of the Board of Trustee of the ICT Foundation – Tony Ojobo, Chidi Oliseowe, Team Lead, Madonna Systems Nigeria Limited, Joel Friday, Senior Sales Manager, Promethean Consulting Limited and a host of other dignitaries were present at the event.
Mr Tony Ojobo, equipped with industry knowledge and experience of almost two decade, gave a talk on Big Data, its importance and how its changing the world and the importance of cyber protection. He then linked all of these to Acronis and how Acronis can provide local service providers with a all-in-one service that enable them optimize their operations as well as providing only the best service to their clients. Members of the audience seemed fascinated by his explanation as quite a handful of people had relevant questions to ask about Acronis and the new data centre that promises to be a game changer for local service providers, businesses and even individuals that may need to tap into data protection services.
Peter French Regional General Manager Middle East & Africa at Acronis spoke about what prompted Acronis to launch a new data centre in Nigeria. He explained that “A local presence is a necessity for modern cloud businesses and we are proud to deliver the Acronis Cyber Cloud Data Center in Nigeria. Now, Nigerian companies, and businesses from neighbour countries too, will be able to store their strategic data locally while being backed by a global partner who is on standby 24/7/365 to address any issues”.

During the question and answer session, a lot of questions were asked but one that stood out for us was that of a young man who asked what makes Acronis different from a service like Amazon when it comes to native apps. Nicholas Keene, an engineer at Acronis based in South Africa, gave his response saying that Acronis does an analysis on these local apps and uses AI to monitor their models and systems before deciding what solution best suits them. Sara Pinheiro, Head of Africa region, Acronis, was also present to answer questions from partners and invited guests.
Some of Acronis’ partners were given room to speak. “Today the world depends so much on data to the point where we can say data is life, and data security cannot be over emphasized. With the opening of their new Data Centre in Nigeria, Acronis demonstrates its level of commitment to the Africa Market”, Chidi Oliseowe, Team Lead, Madonna Systems Nigeria Limited said.
Joel Friday, Senior Sales Manager, Promethean Consulting Limited also spoke about the new Acronis data centre saying that “We have been an Acronis partner since 2017 and we do not see our company partnering with anyone else. It is the only cyber protection company with integrated cyber security and data protection (with back up for OEMs). Acronis building a data centre in Nigeria is a huge milestone for the industry in Nigeria. In-country data security has been a priority for most organizations in Nigeria, and the idea of a DC locally will definitely help partners like us add more value to our end users’ infrastructure”.
