Guest Post: What Are Junk Files And How To Clean Them Out In Windows 7

Junk and other unnecessary files accumulate on your system over time in different forms. These files not only occupy precious storage space on your system but it also affects your system speed and performance negatively. Let’s understand what are junk files on your system and how to clean out them.

Junk files: Junk files accumulate on your system hard drive in large numbers over time occupying precious storage space. These junk files are usually created by Windows and other programs on your system that writes temporary files, during installation and while running to system hard drive which they need to do in order to work.

Use Disk Cleanup tool: Evert storage device in your system has access to the Disk Cleanup tool. This feature comes pre-installed on your system. It helps you clean your disk from all unnecessary files and data. It helps you speed up your system speed significantly. It helps you clean temporary Internet files, thumbnails, downloaded program files, offline web pages, temporary files, old Windows folders and much more. You can use this built-in tool to de-clutter and organize data on your system for improved system performance. To access this tool on your system, you need to follow these steps.

  • Go to Start menu and type “Disk Cleanup” in the search bar.
  • Select the disk cleanup utility from the given options and open it.
  • Select and open the drive you want to clean and press OK.
  • Here, you will find a list of all folders & programs in your Windows system. You can select any of given options to manage or delete them from your system.
  • To delete file or folders select them from the list and press OK.

If you can’t find disk cleanup utility by simply typing it in the search bar, then you can also try typing “Free up disk space” in the search bar and selecting it from the given options. The cleaning process using this utility may take time according to data it needs to clean.

Remove system files: You can find this option under Disk Cleanup tool by the name of “Clean up system files” button. Obsolete or old system files occupy lot system storage space for no good reason. Apart from necessary system files to run your system smooth, your system stores lot of unnecessary files which remain on your computer as a second copy or in the form of idle files. Once you click on “Clean up system files” button, it will take some time to provide a detailed analysis of your system files. If you are on Windows 7 then it may display GBs of Service Pack Backup Files listed, which can be used to undo a service pack. To remove unwanted system files from your system, follow these steps.

  • Go to system Start menu and type “Disk Cleanup” in the search box and hit enter.
  • Select the disk cleanup utility from given options and find the “Clean up System Files” button available at lower left corner of the window.
  • Press this button to open it and select the drive from which you want to remove unnecessary system files and press OK.
  • Here, you will find all system files on your computer. It includes lot of unnecessary system files which only occupy your valuable storage space for no good reasons. Find and delete these files to recover some precious storage space.

Note: Windows update cleanup may also include several GBs of files you can remove. These files are the update files themselves, which are archived by Windows for easier access later if needed. Just click on check box next to these files and press OK to delete theses files. Remember, if you do that, Windows may not be able to roll back to the older versions of the system unless you have external backup of your C: drive first. Here, you need to retain or delete all such files.

Clean Recycle Bin: This is simplest method to remove junk and other unnecessary files from your system storage. Go to your system recycle bin, simply select all files there and delete them. To access recycle bin on your Windows 7 system, press Windows + E to open File Explorer and find the recycle bin in the left-hand pane. Open it and select the files you want to delete.
