ChatGPT’s AI Search Engine Becomes Widely Available

AI search engine; ChatGPT, is available to all users beginning yesterday, Monday. That it will make ChatGPT-powered internet searches available to all users, intensifying its challenge to Google’s supremacy. OpenAI disclosed the information as part of its latest 12 Days of Ship-mas webcast, which also revealed an “optimized” version of the function for smartphones and the option to search with advanced speech mode.

The Search engine; ChatGPT, was originally available to paid subscribers in October. It is now available at the free tier, but you must have an account and be logged in.

The San Francisco-based tech startup expanded its ChatGPT generative AI chatbot with search engine capabilities, but only paid customers could access the feature.

According to the firm, the newly public act allows users to receive “fast, timely answers” with connections to relevant web sources, which was previously only available through a standard search engine.

ChatGPT now resembles a typical search engine as a result of one of its mobile search upgrades. When searching for a specific area, such as restaurants or local attractions, ChatGPT will return a list of results that include photographs, ratings, and hours. Clicking on a location will provide additional information about the location, and you may even view a map with directions from within the app.

Another component that seeks to improve ChatGPT search speed while searching for specific types of websites, such as “hotel booking websites.” Instead of responding immediately, ChatGPT will display links to websites before providing additional information about each option. ChatGPT can also automatically offer up-to-date information from the web when Advanced Voice Mode is enabled, however this is only available to premium subscribers.

In prior livestreams, OpenAI also disclosed the release of its text-to-image model Sora and a $200 per month ChatGPT Pro membership.

The ChatGPT upgrade enables the AI chatbot to give real-time web information.

“We’re bringing search to all logged-in free users of ChatGPT,” OpenAI chief product officer Kevin Weil stated in a YouTube video post.

“That means it’ll be available globally on every platform where you use ChatGPT.”

Examples of OpenAI’s new interface mirrored Google search results and Google Maps, but without the clutter of advertising.

They also looked similar to the UI of Perplexity, another AI-powered search engine that provides a more conversational version of Google by displaying the sources cited in the answer.

“We’re really just making the ChatGPT experience that you know better with up-to-date information from the web,” ChatGPT Search product lead Adam Fry explained in the video.

“We’re rolling this out to hundreds of millions of users, starting today.”

Instead of releasing a separate product, OpenAI has built search right into ChatGPT.

The search tool is enabled by default, but users can also activate it manually by clicking on the web search button.

Since its inception, data on AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude has been constrained by time constraints, resulting in out-of-date responses. Google and Microsoft, on the other hand, integrate AI-generated responses with online results.

The addition of internet search to ChatGPT may raise more concerns about the startup’s ties to Microsoft, a big OpenAI investor that is also attempting to increase the reach of its Bing search engine against Google.

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has set his organisation on a course to become an internet behemoth even as Elon Musk backed by Zuckerberg are arguing that OpenAI should not be allowed to become a for-profit organisation. To counter this, OpenAI’s CEO released emails and documents showing that Elon Musk who was an early financier of the organisation actually wanted it to become for-profit at some point.

In a recent round of fundraising, he successfully rocketed the company to a staggering $157 billion value, with investors including Microsoft, Tokyo-based giant SoftBank, and AI chipmaker Nvidia.

Enticing new customers with search engine capabilities will significantly boost the company’s computing requirements and prices.
