OpenAI said Wednesday that ChatGPT users can now take notes during brainstorming sessions, meetings, and thinking-out-loud soliloquies by using “record mode.” Users may now query ChatGPT for information about their saved spreadsheets and documents, such as “What was my company’s revenue in Q1 last year?” and it can link to Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, Sharepoint, and OneDrive. or “Recount the number of times I rode the ferry during my trip to Italy last year.”
For business customers, OpenAI’s ChatGPT is introducing additional features like meeting records, connectivity with various cloud providers, and support for MCP connections to access deep research tools.
According to a press release from the company, “ChatGPT will organize and clearly present the data – and respect your organization’s existing permissions on the user level – from those documents, with citations.”
Dropbox, Box, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Google Drive connections are being added to ChatGPT as part of the launch. This enables ChatGPT to search through users’ own services for information in order to respond to their inquiries. For example, an analyst could develop an investment thesis using the company’s documents and PowerPoint deck.
Only ChatGPT Team members (a subscription plan that costs $25 per person per month with an annual subscription of two or more users) can presently use the recording capability. Timestamped citations and action items are included in the transcriptions and notes.
Users using ChatGPT Team, Enterprise, or Edu—OpenAI’s student-focused product—can connect to third-party storage providers.
According to OpenAI, the new functionality will adhere to the access control hierarchy of an organization.
One of the most important features of the productivity suites is the ability to record and transcribe meetings. The function can recommend actions and provide notes with time-stamped citations. As with papers and files across the integrated services, users will be able to query for information in their meeting notes. Additionally, action items can be transformed into Canvas documents, which are OpenAI’s writing and coding project tools.
The tool is in competition with ClickUp, Zoom, and, more recently, Notion, all of which have included meeting summary and transcribing capabilities in some capacity.
Furthermore, the business is launching beta versions of deep research connectors for HubSpot, Linear, and a few Microsoft and Google applications. According to OpenAI, users may now create comprehensive study reports utilizing Deep study by combining online information with data and knowledge from these sources. According to OpenAI, all paid users have access to connectors.
Additionally, clients can connect to additional tools for in-depth research using MCP (model context protocol). According to the firm, Pro, Team, and Enterprise users would be able to access MCP assistance.
Meeting recording and transcription is one of the productivity suites’ most crucial features. In addition to offering notes with time-stamped citations, the service can suggest actions. Users will be able to query for information in their meeting notes, just like they can with papers and files across the linked services. Action items can also be converted into OpenAI’s writing and coding project tool, Canvas documents.
The program competes with ClickUp, Zoom, and, more recently, Notion, all of which offer some form of transcription and meeting summary feature.
OpenAI encourages businesses to use ChatGPT even more than they may already be in their workplace workspaces, which is why these functionalities have been added. Here, the business is likely to be successful. OpenAI has a first-mover advantage, even though startups like Notion and Lux Capital-backed Context are also attempting to provide AI-powered office tools with research and analysis capabilities.
Its enterprise-focused offerings currently have three million subscribers, up from the two million OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap stated in February.
The new functionalities are a cornerstone of OpenAI’s strategy to gain market share from high-spending enterprise AI clients. Less than a year after ChatGPT’s debut, in 2023, it introduced ChatGPT Enterprise, which has Block, Canva, The Estée Lauder Companies, and PwC as clients. Then, in January 2024, ChatGPT Team—a choice for smaller businesses or teams—was introduced.
From 2 million in February, OpenAI now boasts 3 million “paying business users.”
The business is directly vying for high-paying enterprise AI clients with both startups and tech behemoths. In an industry-wide AI arms race that is expected to generate more than $1 trillion in income in less than seven years, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Anthropic are all vying for the same kind of business and are rushing to implement generative AI features for them.
