Character AI, a new monitoring feature was released by AI, a well-known chatbot company that is being sued for juvenile safety concerns, to allow parents to see how their kids are using the app.
On Tuesday, the California-based artificial intelligence (AI) platform Character AI unveiled a new security feature. The tool, called Parental Insights, targets platform users who are younger than 18. By adding a parent or guardian’s email address, these users can receive activity summaries from the site for their teen. More openness between parents and teens regarding the latter’s in-app activity is the goal of the new parental control tool. Following many lawsuits against the corporation, which claimed that the software caused special harm to children who used it, improvements were made, for the AI chatbot’s detrimental answers to minors, the teenager safety function was implemented.
The AI company announced the new feature’s introduction in a blog post. Both premium users and those on the free tier will be able to access it. The function is available to all registered users under the age of 18, and they can opt to email their parent or guardian a summary of their in-app actions. The post said that these findings provide a better understanding of how Character.AI is used by users under the age of 18.
The youngster can access the tool through their account choices. In order to invite the adult to get a weekly activity report generated by Character.AI, the user must first provide their email address.
The teen user’s parents and guardians will receive a daily report that includes details like the average amount of time spent on the platform each day across online and mobile applications, the most popular AI characters they engaged with, and the amount of time spent with each AI character. According to the site, the parent would get specifics about their teen’s interaction patterns from these data. A transcript of the user’s conversations with their companions is not included in the report. A transcript of the user’s conversations with their companions is not included in the report. Importantly, these data will not be used to disseminate conversation content.
Megan Garcia, a grieving mother, filed a lawsuit in October after her son, Sewell Setzer III, committed suicide after having a lot of conversations with a character on the site. Character was sued again in December by two moms in Texas.AI claims that the business purposefully exposed their kids to offensive and sexualized material.
The minor must go to Settings, Preferences >, and choose the Parental Insights page in order to add a parent or guardian’s email address. The user will be able to add their email address on a new page. The platform will send an invitation to the addressee’s inbox when it has been added. Users can confirm that they want to receive daily reports by hitting the “Agree” icon at the bottom of the email.
Users can choose the dropdown menu next to the email address in the parental insights page to request that the address be removed if they choose to cease sharing their activities. An email notifying the parent or guardian that an email removal request has been submitted will be sent to them. Before the email address is deleted, they must confirm.
Character AI, the function, according to AI, is a “first step” in informing parents about their child’s platform activities. The business has launched many new safety initiatives in recent months, such as a distinct model for teenagers and announcements that avatars are not actual people.
“As we evolve our parental insights tool to most effectively meet our community’s needs, we will continue to listen to teens, their parents, and leading teen safety organizations,” the business stated in its statement about the feature.
In the upcoming days, parents, if you receive an email from Character.AI stating that your teen has invited you to view their weekly activity statistics, take that as a sign of trust. Their reports may give you some comfort in knowing that they want your advice on how to appropriately spend their time on the app.
