CES 2022 may like be the best compared to CES events in the past. While last year’s event was entirely virtual due to the pandemic, this year’s show has received a flood of technological inventions by many big companies offering better positioning for the future. These big names in tech have continued to announce new products both virtually and in person, and CES 2022 has particularly been exciting when it comes to laptops.
Not only did the likes of Intel, AMD and Nvidia churn out brand-new mobile components with robust capacities that can power up the laptops of the future. Laptop manufacturers like Dell, Asus, and Lenovo are taking their sides and showing off some of their upcoming devices with a number of jaw-dropping features that just make you want to take a moment to absorb the shock that comes along. 2022 already feels like it’s going to be that exciting year for laptops, and below are some of the best laptops that caught the eye and we have rounded up on at CES 2022. This list includes some innovative devices that hint at what the future holds for the form factor.
1. Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen 3
First on the list is this powerful Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen 3 that has pushed the envelope with its design. The laptop already looks like a hit especially for creative. The Lenovo laptop presents a unique 21:10 ultra-wide aspect ratio screen. Call it a long laptop, but you can be assured it gives you that extra workspace. Ultra-wide monitors on desktop PCs are quite phenomenal especially when the user is one who requires multiple apps open at once, so it’s cool to see the same ultra-wide feature on the laptop.
In addition to that widescreen is a secondary 8-inch screen to the side of the keyboard, which can provide functions of a drawing tablet with a stylus. This is definitely that type of laptop targeted at digital creatives, and it’s packed with some great hardware. The Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen 3 will be selling starting at $1,399.
2. Alienware X14
Many years ago when you hear a gaming laptop, what that suggests is a big, bulky and – let’s face it – ugly laptop. These days’ stylish and svelte devices are emerging and the Alienware X14 is defiantly the latest example. However, at CES 2022, the Alienware X14 is the first time that Dell’s mission to make a high-end and portable gaming laptop has started to come to fruition. Alienware is that brand that has come to be recognized for developing luxury gaming devices, and the Alienware X14 reiterates that tradition. Alienware’s iconic design language is now added to a thin and light laptop.
Forged with the Nvidia RTX 3060 GPU, maybe not the most powerful gaming laptop you can find around in months to come, but it’s definitely that laptop that still has that capacity to handle modern games on its 14-inch 144Hz Full HD screen. For users searching for a stylish gaming laptop that gets the job done, for playing the latest games on the go, the Alienware X14 could be just on your wishlist.
When the Alienware X14 will be available, we are not quite sure yet but chances that it will show up on store shelves in the next few months are very high, while it’s unlikely that it will be that expensive. Given that it peaks with an RTX 3060, you probably shouldn’t expect it to run Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K or anything. This laptop will come equipped with a 14-inch FHD panel, clocked at 144Hz. That may be far from cutting edge, but it’s the perfect pairing for the GPU.
The laptop comes with an extra space at the back. There is a slight benefit to that extra space in the back of the chassis through – ports. Even for a laptop this small, there’s a wide array of ports on offer, with two Thunderbolt 4 ports, one USB-C port, also used for charging, a USB-A, an SD card reader, HDMI a headphone jack – something Dell cut out for another portable laptop at CES 2022.
3. Asus ROG Flow Z13
Asus comes with one of the most interesting laptops at CES 2022, the Asus ROG Flow Z13, which comes with a fully detachable keyboard. Removing the keyboard automatically transform your laptop into that powerful gaming tablet. The tablet is incredibly thin at just 12mm, but you will find out it has some of the most impressive specs, including an Intel Core i9-12900H processor and Nvidia RTX 3050 Ti graphics card.
This means it’s not just easily portable, but it’ll handle modern games with a bit of tweaking. The screen comes with a 1080p resolution and 120Hz refresh rate, and there’s also an option for a 4K screen with a 60Hz refresh rate. As with the Flow X13, the Z13 is able to be paired with Asus’ external GPU product, the XG Mobile, which is now capable of housing up to an RTX 3080 or the newly announced AMD Radeon RX 6850M XT. No pricing information has been released for this Asus product yet, but we dare say it will be superbly expensive, given that it can be paired with the XG Mobile. The Asus ROG Flow Z13 is sure one of the most exciting gaming devices to come out in 2022.
Much of Asus’ other announcements are in the form of updates to its existing ROG Strix and Zephyrus products, with configurations now featuring the 12th-gen Intel Core processors, AMD’s Ryzen 6000 series, the latest Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 and 3080 Ti laptop GPUs and AMD’s Radeon RX 6000S series.
4. Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED
Another product from Asus that catches the eye at CES 2022 is the innovative laptop, called the Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED. As the name suggests, this laptop is one on the foldable list. Unfolded, you can easily have a huge 17.3-inch tablet, fold into an L shape and use it in ‘laptop mode’ with a 12.5-inch screen, while the lower half serves as an on-screen keyboard. This laptop comes with a 1,920 x 1,280 resolution.
The Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED sure comes with very impressive-sounding specs, with 12th-generation Intel chips, Thunderbolt 4 connectivity and Harmon Kardon speakers.
However, it’s the screen tech that’s really super impressive, with the OLED panel being Pantone-validated. Not only is it OLED, which offers excellent image quality, especially when it comes to contrast, the screen is also Pantone validated, supports Dolby Vision and offers 100% DCIP3 colour gamut.
In 2022 it’s most likely that there will be a launch of more foldable screen laptops but the Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED already looks like it could be the one with the best chance of being successful as it ticks all the boxes over and over again. According to Asus, the hinge has been tested for 30,000 cycles, so hopefully the Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED isn’t prone to damaged screens along the fold, which plagued some early foldable smartphones.
5. XMG Neo 15 with XMG Oasis
Keeping powerful gaming components cool continues to be a struggle for most manufacturers of gaming laptops. Unlike desktop PCs, laptops have limited space for airflow and cooling options, and this has resulted in many gaming laptops throttling performance because they run very hot, or incredibly noisy as loads of fans kick into gear.
The XMG Neo 15 gaming laptop presents a solution to this problem in the form of the XMG Oasis external liquid cooler. The laptop comes with a laptop’s existing cooling solution which keeps the temperatures under control, and according to XMG, using the Oasis drops the temperatures of the processor and GPU of the XMG Neo 15 by an impressive 68F / 20C.
The XMG Oasis will be sold separately and also combined with the XMG Neo 15, which sports up to an RTX 3080 Ti, 12th-gen Intel Core i7 and 64GB of DDR5 RAM, it offers a unique way of eking out the maximum possible power from a gaming laptop. Find out more.
6. Razer Blade 14 (2022)
You know what? We think 14-inch laptops are going to be the size to get in 2022. While 13-inch and 15-inch laptops may be more popular, we’ve seen some great 14-inch laptops at CES 2022, which represent a happy medium of offering more screen space than the smaller 13-inch models while being more portable than 15-inch devices.
The Razer Blade 14 (2022) is the perfect example of this, with the 14-inch model coming with AMD’s new Ryzen 6000 series processors (the Blade 15 and Blade 17 that were also shown off are Intel-only), and can be kitted out with up to an Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti laptop GPU. So, not only is it small and portable, but it’ll be a gaming beast as well. Find out more.
