Thanks to Apple Intelligence, the iPhone 16 lineup—which includes the 16 Pro Max and base model—has 8GB of RAM. Apple Vice President of Hardware Technology Johny Srouji confirmed in an interview with Geekerwan yesterday.
In the interview, Srouji clarified that “DRAM is one aspect” of determining the hardware specifications required for Apple Intelligence, adding that the feature “led us to believe we need to get to 8GB.” He also said the additional RAM will “help immensely” with things like high-end gaming on tablets.
Apple has not previously disclosed the RAM capacity of the iPhone 16 series, but following the phone’s announcement. Apple has stated that iOS 18 won’t bring Apple Intelligence to the iPhone 15, which only has 6GB of RAM when the feature set comes. Apple isn’t the only hardware manufacturer that has lately increased RAM to enable AI. The iPhone 15 Pro will be the only phone that supports it, save the iPhone 16 series.
Apart from that, Srouji talks about the company’s hardware performance philosophy, the features of the new phones’ A18 CPUs, Apple’s thermal design strategy, and the video and image processing of the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro during the approximately 17-minute interview.
