Apple has officially integrated ChatGPT, an AI-driven chatbot from OpenAI, with Siri and other first-party apps and features on all of its operating systems. During a keynote address on Monday at WWDC 2024, the tech giant made the announcement.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said in a statement, “We’re excited to partner with Apple to bring ChatGPT to their users in a new way.” “OpenAI’s goal to make advanced AI accessible to everyone is aligned with this partnership, and Apple shares our commitment to safety and innovation.”

According to Apple, Siri will soon be able to utilize ChatGPT for “expertise” in situations where it could be useful. For instance, you can ask Siri for suggestions on what to cook for your guests using ingredients from your garden, and once you allow it to do so, Siri will immediately pass that information to ChatGPT for a response. Apple claims that the tasks for Siri also include things like finding an image of a driver’s license on the device and extracting information to fill out a form for you, or getting information from user emails when requested to check when their mom’s flight is landing.

Additionally, users can ask Siri to do anything for them by only describing a feature or app they want to utilize, and Siri will be able to understand and retrieve the necessary data. Furthermore, by double-tapping the bottom of the screen, users will soon be able to type inquiries and requests to Siri, which they may then continue by either typing or using voice commands. Asking questions about your docs or PDFs with ChatGPT via Siri also allows you to attach photographs to your queries. Additionally, ChatGPT has been incorporated by Apple into system-wide utilities like Writing utilities. With ChatGPT, you can generate content, including photos, or submit an idea for review or modification.

According to Apple, ChatGPT integrations will be available for free on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia later this year. No ChatGPT or OpenAI account is required. They will be powered first by OpenAI’s recently released flagship generative AI model, GPT-4o.

ChatGPT premium plan subscribers of OpenAI will get access to premium capabilities in Siri and other Apple apps that have integrated ChatGPT. According to Apple, privacy safeguards are “built-in” to the integrations; particularly, users’ IP addresses are hidden and OpenAI doesn’t store requests.

Apple’s announcement comes after months of speculation and reports about Apple’s AI ambitions, which included attempts to create its foundation for big language models. While the new Siri features powered by Apple Intelligence will be available in beta for iOS 18 “this fall” in the US, the ChatGPT integration is anticipated to be released later this year.

When Siri was first released on the iPhone 4S in 2011, its ability to react to voice commands and inquiries was remarkable. However, the lack of further advancements has left it feeling like a disappointing afterthought. However, since then, devices like Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT have demonstrated that AI tools and systems are far more powerful. With ChatGPT now fully incorporated into the service and Siri’s enhanced capabilities, the Apple virtual assistant might finally be getting the boost it sorely needs.
