In true Apple fashion, the company has remained quiet about the rumored iPhone 12. If they stick to their usual schedule, they’ll reveal the new phones in September of this year. Even though that’s still a few months away, there are plenty of rumors about the iPhone 12.
If the leaks turn out to be accurate, the iPhone 12 could offer some impressive new features. It may be time to recycle your old iPhone and buy a new one this Fall. Here’s what the next generation of iPhones could look like.
Release Date
Apple has yet to announce when they’re unveiling the new iPhone. As mentioned earlier, they’ve typically stuck to September as their release month in the past. Given how the coronavirus has pushed other things back, though, Apple may wait until October.
Apple makes their phones in China, which had to shut down factories for a while earlier this year. As a result, it’s not out of the question that the iPhone reveal could be later than usual this time. The unexpected release of the new SE in April could also be a sign of their launch schedule changing.
Size and Design
Rumors say that Apple will release four different iPhone models in three different sizes:
- 4-inch iPhone 12
- 1-inch iPhone 12
- 1-inch iPhone 12 Pro
- 7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max
With those numbers, the smallest iPhone 12 would be slightly smaller than the iPhone X. On the other end of the scale, the iPhone 12 Pro Max would have the largest screen of any iPhone to date.
Several sources say that all four iPhone 12s could feature a squared-edge design like the iPhone 4. One leak claims the 12 Pro Max will be just 7.4mm thick, 0.7mm thinner than the 11 Pro Max. Given the current miniaturization trend in smartphones, a thinner iPhone seems like a reasonable step.
There’s a rumor that the iPhone 12 could add navy blue as a new finish. Since the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max introduced the midnight green finish, that’s not unlikely. The iPhone 11’s multi-lens camera design is also likely to make a comeback.
New Features
The most talked-about possible feature of the iPhone 12 is the introduction of 5G capability. Most everyone expects all four new iPhone models to feature 5G connectivity. Many other phone companies, including Motorola and Samsung, have already released 5G phones, so that’s to be expected.
Some rumors suggest that at least one of the new iPhones will feature a 3D camera. People also expect other improvements to the cameras, such as 4K video recording at 120 and 240 frames per second. A couple of leaks have said that at least one model will have a smaller front-facing camera too.
The iPhone 12 may offer a 120Hz refresh rate, which is double what most phones have. Some people expect the higher-end iPhones to feature the iPad Pro’s ProMotion display as well.
Not all of the rumored features come as a welcome change. Some of the rumors are saying that the iPhone 12 won’t ship with EarPods. If they don’t, that’s probably a way to lower the cost of the phone, since 5G technologies tend to be expensive.
Price
Speaking of price, the iPhone 12’s cost could be similar to the last generation. Most rumors say that the pricing will look something like this:
- $649 for the 5.4-inch iPhone 12
- $749 for the 6.1-inch iPhone 12
- $999 for the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro
- $1,099 for the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max
For reference, the iPhone 11 started at $699 and the 11 Pro Max at $1,099. Other rumors suggest that the 12 will start around $749. What the prices will be for the models with more storage remains a mystery.
The Next Generation of Smartphones Is Near
With technologies like 5G rolling out, the new wave of smartphones is going to be an exciting step forward. When Apple unveils the iPhone 12 lineup this Fall, they’ll cement the next generation in smartphone technology. These rumors are making the new iPhones look like something out of the future.
There’s still a lot of uncertainty around what the new iPhones will look like. If one thing’s for sure, though, it’s that the iPhone 12 will be Apple’s techiest phone yet. You’ll just have to wait until the Fall to know what that looks like for sure.
