US-based e-commerce giant Amazon, announces plans of shutting down its website ranking site (Alexa.com) by May 1, 2022. Founded in 1996, the service was known for providing web traffic analysis and listing the most popular websites around the world. Henceforth the service has stopped offering new subscriptions starting December 8, 2021.
Alexa is best known for ranking the world’s most popular websites, this information is frequently referenced in news coverage and public resources like Wikipedia. The company extrapolates this data from a small sample of web users who use its browser extension and from sites that choose to install its traffic monitoring software directly.
Amazon has also revealed that the API of this service will be finally turned off by the company come December 2022 after the shutdown of Alexa Internet. However, Amazon has planned to give users the ability to back up their Alexa internet data before the service comes to a halt for good. Paid users of Alexa’s services can export their data and delete their accounts.
An end of service notice by the e-commerce company has surfaced online stating that “Twenty-five years ago, we founded Alexa Internet. After two decades of helping you find, reach, and convert your digital audience, we’ve made the difficult decision to retire Alexa.com on May 1, 2022. Thank you for making us your go-to resource for content research, competitive analysis, keyword research, and so much more.”
Over the years, rankings that come from Alexa.com have always been simultaneously popular and contentious. It didn’t come as a surprise given the importance of establishing traffic metrics in many online businesses. Even though there have been many accusations that Alexa Rank could be gamed, it still remained the most familiar name within the web-ranking world. A number of alternate services internet users may want to consider include SimilarWeb, Tranco, and ComScore.
Amazon is yet to state an official reason for the decision to shut down the Alexa Internet service. Report according to data from traffic and marketing analytics firm Semrush have suggested that Alexa Internet Service has been a constant decline in the service’s own traffic for years. Alexa Internet’s Twitter and Facebook accounts are yet to carry an update stating the upcoming shutdown.
