In a move aimed at safeguarding the privacy of its users, Airbnb has announced a significant policy change that will prohibit hosts from using indoor security cameras effective April 30th. There were some concerns from users that they felt monitored in Airbnb apartments with some going as far as saying they didn’t even feel safe in private areas of the apartments.
Previously, hosts were permitted to install security cameras in designated “common areas” of their listings, with strict guidelines in place to ensure transparency and guest consent. However, reports of guests discovering hidden cameras have prompted Airbnb to implement a blanket ban on indoor surveillance cameras. Some 360-degree cameras indoors can penetrate even from common areas to intrude into private areas of the apartment. Majority of these complaints have come from the Asian region where users have said they noticed cameras in strange places like lamps, TV remote areas, kitchen and areas close to bathrooms.
Under the new policy, hosts will no longer be allowed to deploy indoor security cameras, regardless of their intended use or placement within the rental property. This decisive action follows growing concerns over privacy breaches and underscores Airbnb’s commitment to fostering a secure and trusting environment for guests.
In addition to the prohibition on indoor cameras, Airbnb has introduced enhanced regulations for outdoor security cameras. Hosts must now disclose the presence and locations of outdoor cameras prior to booking, with restrictions on their use to prevent intrusion into areas of expected privacy. Like the Police warns sometimes when there are cameras in some areas around the city, Airbnb hosts must now disclose not just that the property is being watched but where these optical instruments may be.
Moreover, the updated policy mandates the disclosure of noise decibel monitors, previously banned by Airbnb in 2022, to mitigate disturbances and ensure a peaceful rental experience for guests.
Juniper Downs, Airbnb’s head of community policy and partnership, emphasizes that these changes were developed in collaboration with stakeholders and privacy experts, reflecting a concerted effort to address evolving concerns and prioritize user privacy.
Hosts have until the end of April to remove indoor security cameras from their listings, with Airbnb warning of consequences for non-compliance. Any reports of indoor cameras post-implementation will prompt investigations, potentially resulting in the removal of the host’s listing or account.
While the new policy cannot entirely eradicate the presence of hidden cameras, it represents a significant step towards bolstering user confidence and curbing potential privacy violations. As Airbnb continues to refine its policies in response to feedback, the welfare and privacy of its global community remain paramount.
