WhatsApp is testing a new design that prominently displays a number of AI chatbots. AIs now have their own tab on the app’s homescreen thanks to the design, which is exclusively available through the Android beta.
Customizing avatar AI characters within the app is one of the goals of WhatsApp’s Android version. The feature tracker, which reports that this app was being built and was visible in the most recent beta releases, is one improvement.
One feature tracker claims that WhatsApp for Android is developing an AI feature that would allow users to build custom AI avatars within the app. The AI character creation tool on Instagram and Messenger is reportedly comparable to the new function. According to the feature tracker, the AI can create a profile photo and bio, and users will be able to utilize a text prompt to describe the chatbot’s personality qualities and concentration area. Furthermore, it is reported that the app is creating a special tab to display the AI characters.
The move, which dedicates one of WhatsApp’s four tabs exclusively to its AI functions, was noticed by WABetaInfo. It offers a variety of “Popular AI characters” to converse with, in addition to others arranged according to topic. Additional AI-powered features on WhatsApp include a Meta AI-powered search tool and AI-generated stickers and photos.
The Android WhatsApp beta, which came out in version 2.25.1.26, was when the AI character creation capability was found. WhatsApp for Android May Add Artificial Intelligence Characters as a feature as this AI character creation functionality was observed in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.1.26 version, according to feature tracker WABetaInfo. Beta testers cannot access the feature at this time because it is still in development. The WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.1.24 update also included a distinct tab for AI characters, according to the feature tracker. Additionally, this feature is not yet visible. The public and user-generated AI bots would be controlled by the new tab.
Although it’s unclear if these AI characters made in WhatsApp can be utilized in other Meta-platform apps, this integration is consistent with Meta’s cross-platform capabilities. Users can choose from a variety of typical bot personalities, including those for amusement, assistance, or even niche topics like pop culture.
Although they are only accessible in the US and a few other countries, and only in a small number of languages, these AI tools and chatbots are not new to WhatsApp. Currently accessible through the main Chats tab of the app, this change appears to make them more noticeable.
Their system may also generate a bio and profile image for an AI character based on user data. The personality description procedure is the initial phase. Further guidelines derived from other Meta applications include modifying privacy preferences and fine-tuning additional features. The purpose of the suggestions at the bottom of the input screen is to assist users in creating engaging and useful descriptions for their chatbots.
The AI character creation tool seems to be comparable to that found in other Meta-owned apps, according to screenshots that the feature tracker supplied. To enable users to develop new AI characters from start or using an existing template, the functionality probably makes use of AI Studio. According to the leaked screenshot, users could specify the features and emphasis area of their customized chatbot in up to 1,000 characters.
In a second beta update earlier this week, WABetaInfo discovered that the app is also experimenting with extending the variety of AI bots by including the ability to build customized AI characters. Custom AI bot creation is already possible with Meta, but only via the Instagram website’s AI Studio. The process is greatly simplified when the choice is added straight into an app.
WhatsApp also included description suggestions at the bottom of the screen to give users ideas or a place to start when writing a description. Although the screenshot only showed step one (out of three), if the procedure is comparable to AI Studio on Instagram or Messenger, the further steps would probably involve creating a picture and bio as well as choosing the AI chatbot’s privacy settings.
The other graphic shows that WhatsApp may also create a separate tab specifically for these AI characters. This tab seems to display every user-created chatbot along with every other public AI character. It is noteworthy that it is unclear if the AI bots developed for WhatsApp will also appear on the other Meta apps.
The Communities tab has been replaced by the new AI tab, although that feature will remain. A “streamlined” version of Community formation beneath the Chats page was introduced in an earlier beta release earlier this week.
WhatsApp, one of the most popular messaging apps globally, is always enhancing its features. Chatbots that use AI are in line with AI that has lately been integrated into consumer electronics. This future could expand WhatsApp’s functionality beyond simple texting by adding entertaining and personalized features.
Even though the feature isn’t available currently, it should be in upcoming versions. Through the Google Play Store, users may sign up for the WhatsApp beta to test out the new features. If not, they can wait until the official release of the app to try to access AI-enabled tools.
Although there is a cap on the number of testers and no way to sign up at this time, the WhatsApp beta is accessible via Google Play. We don’t know whether or when the AI tab will be included in the live build of the app, but it’s probably going to be restricted to the nations where the AI features are already accessible.
