Ex-OpenAI CTO Mira Murati Fundraising for New AI Venture

According to Reuters, Mira Murati, the former Chief Technical Officer of OpenAI, is seeking venture capitalist funding for her new artificial intelligence company.

According to one of the insiders who asked to remain anonymous in order to discuss personal concerns, the new business intends to develop AI solutions based on proprietary models. It’s unclear if Murati will take over as CEO of the new company.

Murati’s spokesperson chose not to comment.

According to one of the insiders, although the negotiations are still in their early phases, Murati’s new business might collect more than $100 million because of her fame and the money required to train proprietary models, but the exact amounts have not yet been decided.

According to the reports, Barret Zoph, a well-known researcher who departed OpenAI on the same day as Murati in late September, may also join the new business. Requests for comment from Zoph were not answered.

According to earlier reports from The Information, Murati has been hiring OpenAI staff members to join her new business, and Zoph is preparing to launch a new company.

At OpenAI, Murati led ground-breaking initiatives including ChatGPT and DALL-E for more than six years. She played a significant role in OpenAI’s multibillion-dollar alliance with Microsoft, the company’s biggest investor.

Murati has established herself as one of the most well-known CEOs in the nascent field of artificial intelligence because of her quick ascent at OpenAI.

According to her LinkedIn page, Murati began working for OpenAI in June 2018 and was elevated to CTO in May 2022. She previously worked at Tesla and the augmented reality firm Leap Motion before joining OpenAI.

As the public face of the ChatGPT creator, she regularly appeared with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Murati led the presentation when OpenAI unveiled its GPT-4o model in May, which can have realistic voice interactions.

As the firm undergoes significant governance structure changes, including the removal of the nonprofit board’s power, her surprise resignation in late September was the most recent high-profile departure from the ChatGPT creator. When Altman was fired by the non-profit board last year, Murati, who had been acting as interim CEO for a short time, gave the excuse that she wanted to pursue personal development.

Although there is some curiosity about the precise role Murati will play, a person close to the new partnership told Reuters that the company will create goods based on proprietary concepts.

It’s unknown if she will assume the CEO position or let someone else have that place at the table. The proposals are still in the early stages of development.

Given Murati’s background, standing as a top executive in the rapidly developing field of artificial intelligence, and the amount of money needed to train the models, sponsors may be willing to provide more than $100 million. The ultimate numbers, nevertheless, have not yet been established.

Along with competitors like Anthropic and Safe Superintelligence, Murati is part of an increasing number of former OpenAI executives starting their own businesses.

After more than six years with the ChatGPT manufacturer, the 35-year-old Albanian abruptly announced her retirement from OpenAI last month.
