One of your primary goals is to find keywords that you can use to boost your Google ranking.
The default approach is usually to enter a broad keyword search using a popular search tool and then use the result to enhance the results you are getting from using link building services in order to increase search engine visibility.
Although you will get results from that basic approach it often means that you are overlooking some excellent opportunities if you can reveal some untapped keywords that can boost your response rate.
Untapped potential with newly published pages
A good way to find keywords that you can possibly rank for quickly would be to search out pages that have been freshly published but are already generating traffic with Google.
If you are using Ahrefs to perform your keyword searches you can use the Content Explorer feature to find these pages.
Once you have entered a broad topic you can then narrow your search results down by switching the search mode to In Title and by filtering for pages that have been published within the last three months.
If you then filter for pages that exceed more than 500 search visits this should yield some useful untapped keywords to exploit.
Make use of keyword modifiers
The concept of a keyword modifier is that it is an additional search term added to a base keyword.
If someone is searching for fitted kitchens, for example, they may well add extra details to their search so it reads something like fitted kitchens with built-in appliances.
Using a base keyword with a modifier should give you a lot more options. It allows you the chance to create lots of topics that you may not have so much competition for which you could write about to boost your ranking profile.
Try a bit of reverse-engineering to steal a march over your competitors
If you establish that your competitors are managing to generate search traffic from Google this presents you with an opportunity to do a bit of neat reverse-engineering to identify the low-competition topics they are managing to rank for.
If you search using a filter for traffic that has low-difficulty keywords you should be able to generate a useful list that reveals the keyword research a rival has been doing.
Affiliate keywords can be lucrative
A good way of identifying a large number of affiliate keywords would be to use searches that include terms such as review and product comparison.
The reason these hit the spot is that they are keywords that are regularly used by active buyers who are in the final stages of their purchasing decision-making process.
Think outside the box
The vast majority of us will probably carry out keyword research in much the same way. That means there is scope to stay ahead of the curve by identifying seed keywords that are not so common.
A good method for pinpointing these uncommon seed keywords would be to compile an organic keywords report and then exclude common seeds. You should be able to find some keywords where there is less competition and the rewards are likely to be worth the effort.
Whether you use these tips yourself or get some help with your SEO and link building tactics, these are tips that are well worth exploring.
