If you’re reading this, you probably know about VLC or have at some point in your digital life heard of it. Well if you haven’t, VLC is this application that allows us watch videos in nearly all formats available. The application offers other tools as well including playing internet based videos with the right settings and video creation.

Recently though, the company unveiled a preview of what can be simply described as the app being able to play 360-degree videos. The preview is available on Windows and Mac and will be released in full when VLC 3.0 is launches at the end of the month.

VLC creators VideoLan partnered with Girpotic to develop the 360 view system. “VLC is one of the video players most widely used in the world. We are very proud to contribute our expertise in 360° to this open source player.

This will allow the millions of VLC users to take full advantage of a promising new technology and be widely involved in its democratization.”, said Richard Ollier, co-founder and CEO of Giroptic .

Using your mouse and keyboard, you can control your point of view of photos, videos and panoramas. This feature is also available on VLC mobile apps too and will support 360-degree audio support. The new 360 feature will also support VR headsets like Oculus Rift, Google’s daydream and HTC Vive in 2017. With this, VLC is now a VR player sort of and there are more interesting tools they promise to roll out in future based on their partnership with Giroptic.
